Tour Cultivates Sustainable Culture in the Desert

This May 4-16th 2009, if you see an unusually large number of cyclists towing a mountain of audio equipment down the roads of Utah, smiles on their faces and sweat on their brow, know that you may have just gotten a glimpse into the future of Utah!

It's The Utahpia NOW! Tour: a hardy bunch of Utah's leaders in sustainability, a San Francisco-based rock band, and a legion of strong-legged fans, pedaling from Logan to Provo presenting 20 human-powered shows everywhere from indie-rock clubs, to high school assemblies, to a headlining slot at Salt Lake City's Live Green Festival. Their goal is to spread the vision of a sustainable and utopian Utah- a Utahpia - and to get Utahan's activated in the efforts to make the vision a reality.

The tour also marks the 4th annual rock & roll bicycle tour of Utah for sustainable music pioneers: SHAKE YOUR PEACE!, whose bandleader Gabe Dominguez grew up in Orem, UT.

What makes 'sustainable music' sustainable? Hint: It's not how it rocks, it's how it rolls.

Not only touring on bicycles without the aid of a support van, the band also powers their sound equipment by having an audience member pedal their bikes in-place (made stationary with special kickstands) at the shows, creating electricity by harnessing the momentum of the free-spinning back wheel. In addition, SHAKE YOUR PEACE! puts no copyright on their music (anti-copyright/ pro-stewardship to be exact) and no prices on their CD's and t-shirts, in order to encourage the audience to be voluntary stewards of not only the band's unprotected music and merchandise, but of unprotected nature. “Nothing's for sale, and nothing's for free,” says a sign on the merch table next to a stack of CD's.

“Sustainable music is about expanding the definition of what it means to make harmony for a living – to be a musician. Our goal is to create harmony onstage and offstage,” explains Dominguez. The paradigm has been growing in popularity throughout Northern California – exemplified by 100% human-powered events such as The San Francisco Bicycle Music Festival (www.BicycleMusicFestival.com).

The varied cast of supporting act: Utahpia 2009!, which includes leaders from organizations as diverse as TreeUtah, Food Not Bombs, and BYU Law School, will also blur the line between onstage and off as they invite the audience to dialogue with them further after shows, to take home materials about their organization, and to get involved in volunteer opportunities.

The Utahpia NOW! Tour encourages the public to jump on their bikes and pedal along with them! For the tour schedule and more, check out SHAKE YOUR PEACE!'s wind-powered website: www.ShakeYourPeace.com.
